Athlete of the Week

This week features Bulldog infielder, junior co-captain Whitney Olson.

As a sophomore last season, Whitney placed second among her teammates with a .367 batting average. She also placed second on the team with an on-base percentage totaling .438. Starting in all 39 games last season, Olson rotated between shortstop and second base and was hit by a pitch a school record eight times. This season, Olson captains a Bulldog squad with a .298 average in 131 at-bats, but has shown veteran patience behind the plate drawing a team leading 18 walks.

Major: Health Care Management

What is your favorite sport (other than softball)?: Hockey or Golf

What is your favorite class?: Fundamentals of Selling III.

What is your favorite movie?: "Dumb and Dumber"

What is your favorite professional sport's team?: The Vikings

What is your most memorable sport's moment?: First ever section championship in softball my senior year in 2006.

"It was the first time I had gone to state in any of the three sports I played in high school," she said, "We had to beat International Falls twice in order to win the championship!"

What are your plans after UMD?: I plan to attend Grad School for a MBA either in Minnesota or Colorado.

Unfortunately, the Bulldogs fell in the first round of the NSIC tournament this past weekend to Wayne State, effectively ending their season. Although their season has ended, co-captain Olson portrays the passion and dedication to the sport of softball that has made their season a success.

"We definitely can continue forward if we just use our ability and love for the game," she said.

With the 2009 season now in the books, Olson and the rest of the team look forward to next year's competition.

"I am excited to see where this team can take itself," she said. "My team is so much fun to play with, and I never want it to end."
